　在美国西部堪萨斯怀俄明州大威土忌镇，发生了一名喝醉酒的牛仔殴打妓女并把一名妓女毁容的恶性事件。妓女们告到县里，可是警长“小比尔”达格特只让两名牛仔赔偿7匹马给妓院老板，就草草了事。妓女们十分愤怒，纷纷捐出钱财，悬赏1000美元捉拿罪犯和他的同伙。一个一心想当牛仔枪手、外号“斯科菲尔德小子”的年轻人对这笔赏金动了心。他找到了威廉·芒尼，提出事成后对半分赏金。
　　芒尼曾是一个臭名远扬的杀人不眨眼的暴徒和抢劫火车的强盗。但自从他与漂亮的克劳迪娅结婚，生下两个孩子后，芒尼决定弃恶从善，过正常人的生活。不久，他的妻子不幸病故，悲哀万分的芒尼埋葬了妻子，带着两个子女，去堪萨斯郊外的一个小镇经营一个养猪场，他要用自己辛勤的劳动，把两个孩子抚养成人。但是“斯科菲尔德小子”的出现再次打乱了他的生活。
　　开始，芒尼不愿卷入这罪恶的勾当，因为他想起自己曾承诺过妻子，不再牵涉江湖杀戮，可是，为了那为数不少的赏金，为了能让年幼的子女过上富裕的生活，告别枪手生涯11年的芒尼决定重操旧业，参与这场追杀行动。“斯科菲尔德小子”、芒尼、还有芒尼原来的老搭挡内德·洛根一起追至峡谷，结果了两名牛仔的性命。不幸的是洛根被“小比尔”达格特的手下抓去，被他们折磨至死。
　　当芒尼与达格特在大威土忌相遇，洛根暴尸酒吧间外，愤怒到极点的芒尼杀死了达格特和他的部下。临走时，芒尼发出诅咒：“谁要是开枪射我，我不但要杀死他，还要杀死他妻子，杀死他所有的朋友，把他的屋子化为灰烬。你们最好不要将妓女毁容，不要伤害她们！否则我会回来把你们逐个杀死！”芒尼完成了这场血腥的屠杀，领取了赏金，带上两个孩子离开堪萨斯，去旧金山经商了……

　　本片被誉为最后一部西部片，它向传统的西部片伦理进行挑战，颠覆了传统西部片的英雄神话。本片男主角与以往西部片威武剽悍的仗义骑士有很大区别，他打破了善与恶的分界线，呈现出人性的多层面。影片中充满了忏悔悲怆的气氛，几个主要角色也都是悲剧人物，各自背负着不可摆脱的罪孽和厄运。影片保留了以往西部片暴力宣泄的特点，同时又蒙上一层抑郁的色彩。本片荣获奥斯卡最佳影片、最佳导演、最佳摄影、最佳男配角。
