Micro of Def Tech - Laid Back 8 August 2007 Def Tech is the duo of Micro Yuuki Nishimiya and Shen Shenan Brown. They first met during one of Shen’s many trips to from Hawaii to Japan; his father is English-Japanese linguist James Dean Brown, author of “Understanding Research in Second Language Learning” 1988 and professor at the University of Hawaii, which I’m just mentioning because I think that book is worth reading if you’re interested in linguistics. Anyways—the important aspect of these circumstances is that Shen and Micro hit it off quickly, sharing interests not only in music but in the surfer culture in general. They officially debuted in 2005 with a reggae sound that borrowed from both Japanese and Hawaiian cultures.Their eponymous Def Tech album, released in January of 2005, was an immediate and surprising success. It sold nearly two million copies and spent time at the top of the Oricon charts. In June they released the E.P. Lokahi Lani, setting a new sales record for an indie label along the way. Def Tech was getting lots of air time on radio stations. They had a number of commercial tie-ins. Their 2006 album Catch the Wave provided the title track for a Japanese film of the same name, in which Micro has a cameo as a surfer. Def Tech was selling out concerts with their energetic performances. They were winning awards for their singles, their music videos, and more.And then in 2007 Def Tech suddenly broke up. The official reason given was that they disagreed about the musical direction of the group. One month prior to their break-up Micro released Laid Back, technically a solo album but one which featured contributions from a variety of artists. Def Tech’s disbandment quickly painted Laid Back in a different light; it originally appeared as a semi-experimental solo album from half a duo, something that is not rare enough to be an instant warning siren. But when Def Tech announced their split almost one month to the day after the release of Laid Back it became easy to look back at the album, the large number of collaborations it features, and realize that it was likely the fruit of a splintering seed that appeared within Def Tech months prior.The music of Laid Back is entirely appropriate for its title, and not significantly different from anything Def Tech created as a duo. As a whole it is slower in tempo and there is a small but noticeable tinge of emphasis on Japanese reggae and rap. Which was no surprise, as Micro was the half of Def Tech that brought those elements to the table. That said, Laid Back is an enjoyable solo endeavor.Def Tech would reunite three years later and remains active, making this album a rare break from the norm for either artist.

RAMPANT - Choice of Life 16 September 2008 Yesterday I wrote about the female-lead Japanese rock bands of the 2000’s. RAMPANT is another group that falls into that category. The five members came together in 2005:* Vocalist: Hiroko* Lead Guitar: Atsushi* Rhythm Guitar: Tomoya* Bass: Hajime* Drums: KA+URAMPANT started out playing in the Osaka area. Their hard rock supported by Hiroko’s vocals gained them a fan-base that quickly grew with each energetic live performance. In less than two years RAMPANT was head-lining performances and caught the attention of JSA Records. Under that label RAMPANT recorded and released their first mini-album, Chain, in the fall of 2007. It was a rough and unpolished EP, but it made the band’s potential easy to recognize. Like their contemporary peers—Dazzle Vision, Guardian Hacker, exist†trace, and others—RAMPANT was still experimenting and trying to carve out a distinct style of their own, which I feel is clear if you hear Chain.Today I am uploading their first album, Choice of Life. As with their mini-album, you can hear RAMPANT’s potential, but they still lacked that special something to truly distinguish themselves. My personal opinion is that Hiroko’s vocals was the missing link. It was that she could not sing, but when placed against RAMPANT’s peers she was not as impressive as people like Maiko from Dazzle Vision. Atsushi and Hajime in particular were also pushing the band’s music more towards the ‘screamo’ genre. But Hiroko was inconsistent with the actual screaming.Their second mini-album, Blossom, was their turning-point release in my opinion. It was on that album that Hiroko improved the range and control of her vocals, completing RAMPANT as entire package of entertaining, talented, and skillful screamo. So why, then, am I not uploading that album today? I chose Choice of Life because I want to provide their older music so that you can compare it to their more recent releases. And in general I focus more on older Japanese albums because there are already users here at NyaaTorrents who do a great job of uploading new releases.If you are a RAMPANT fan then obviously you ought to enjoy Choice of Life if you have not already heard it. For those of you who are unfamiliar with RAMPANT but enjoys Japanese rock with female vocalists, you will find a great sample of music to enjoy from this album. Keep in mind that in my opinion of course it does not represent RAMPANT at their best. But that does not mean it is a bad album by any means. Choice of Life is a great, older album that is a snapshot of RAMPANT during their transition to the great screamo band they are today.I hope you enjoy the album! And as I often say, please feel free to request older albums.P.S.: A friend of mine currently has my copy of Chain. When I get it back I will upload RAMPANT’s discography. But said friend lives far away at the moment, so I am not sure when I will get it back.

Dragon Ash - The Best of Dragon Ash with Changes Vol. 1 and 2 5 September 2007 With these torrents I have tried to focus more on Japanese musicians and bands that I do not feel are commonly known, particularly to those of us whose exposure to Japanese music comes via other mediums like anime. However, there are some major artists and bands so important that it would feel wrong to not share their music for anyone who has not heard it. And Dragon Ash is one such band.Beginning in 1996 as a collaboration between Sakurai Makoto and “KJ” Kenji Furuya, Dragon Ash was one of the earliest groups to make hip-hop popular. Yet their earliest music is much closer to punk rock. It was always their intention to focus on hip-hop but punk was popular in the mid-90’s, and that created pressure on KJ in particular which brought a punk influence to their first release in 1997: The Day Dragged On. By 1999 Dragon Ash had taken in more members and had enough success—and more importantly the creative control that can come with it—to focus more on their original hip-hop intentions. In that year that had three singles in the top ten of Oricon charts at the same time, and their 1999 album Viva la Revolution debuted at the number one spot, selling a couple million copies along the way. Dragon Ash had cemented themselves as an important fixture in Japanese hip-hop and gained popular for their experimenting with metal, alternative rock, reggae, rap, and other genres.Dragon Ash released this two-disc album, The Best of Dragon Ash with Changes, to celebrate their tenth anniversary. They have since released a few more albums and singles, but for anyone unfamiliar with Dragon Ash this two-disc set is a comprehensive introduction. And even if you’re already a fan this is a great ‘best-of’ sample of Dragon Ash’s first decade that I think any fan would enjoy.
