Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi - Come on, Stand up! 16 May 2007 Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi is one of those Japanese musicians who seems to be unfamiliar to most fans of Japanese music that I talk with, despite the fact he’s had a career spanning four decades and has released forty-two albums. Forty-two. I think the reason is because a lot of us, myself included, find our introduction into Japanese music via anime or video games, and you’re not going to easily find Nagabuchi’s work through those channels.Nagabuchi began as folk-rock musician in the mid-1970’s, leaning heavily towards the enka genre. However, he soon began to break away from it, especially starting in 1980. Nagabuchi was honest to the public about his dislike for traditional folk music at the time, to the extent that he expressed shame over the musical style of his own debut single, Ama no Arashiyama 1977. Nagabuchi wanted to take his music in a direction away from traditional Japanese elements and borrow more from popular Western rock artists of the time whom he enjoyed. As part of this transition he also wanted to change his voice, preferring to have a deeper sound; to accomplish this he went so far as to gargle alcohol on a regular basis until he got the deeper, harsher sound he wanted. I can’t say that was a good idea, but I have to appreciate the guy’s level of commitment. And commercially it served him well, as his new vocals and harder rock sound made him one of the most successful and well-known Japanese musicians of the 1980’s.Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi continues to write and create new music. But he has become a relic, in my opinion. Nagabuchi has never seriously moved away from the rock sound he established in the 80’s. So even though I am uploading an album from 2007 it is fairly representative of all of his music over the past two decades at a minimum. There are small musical exceptions here and there, but by and large this is the kind of music you should expect if you go looking for more of the man’s work.Enjoy the music everybody, and if you have any requests please let me know!

Chris - Lennon 6 June 2007 For almost fifteen years I have heard that Japan has more musicians and bands than any other country in the world except the USA. I honestly don’t know if that is true, but the amount of interactions I see behind-the-scenes between Japanese and American record labels and production studios makes me inclined to believe it. This album is an example of such interactions. Since the turn of the millennium Chris worked as a songwriter and sound engineer for Japanese bands like Def Tech and American musicians like Alicia Keys. However, he spent the majority of his time in Japan working for avex trax.In 2007 Chris decided to create an original album of his own, Lennon. Musically it reminds me a lot of DJ Deckstream’s contemporary releases. Lyrically the album is a mixed bag of standard R&B fare, but presented in an impressive bilingual way, featuring contributions from both Western and Japanese artists throughout.Lennon is a bit strange simply for being a Japanese album from an American R&B musician. But personally I think it is a successfully entertaining fusion of two cultures.Enjoy as always!

Kimura Yuki - sole sorfege 6 September 2000 Kimura Yuki is better known as an actress. However, before that she had a brief music career lasting three years: 1999–2001. She released a handful of singles and a total of three albums, one per year, and then retired from music to focus solely on her film and television acting.For me, personally, Kimura Yuki represents the end of an era. She was that final 90’s J-Pop star. When Kimura Yuki made her debut Morning Musume was having their first wave of major success, the immensely popular four-girl group Speed was about to disband, future star Koda Kumi was about to release her first single—the Japanese pop landscape was changing. In the midst of all that change Kimura Yuki came across the airwaves like an anchor to the mid-90’s sound of J-Pop that I had loved. She didn’t have the vocal range of her peers, and her music lacked a bit in variety. But Kimura Yuki’s music was just fun. Her albums were everything fun, poppy, and cheesy about 1990’s J-Pop all wrapped into one package.I would have uploaded Kimura Yuki’s discography, as I own all her albums, but for the life of me I cannot find my copy of her 2001 album Process “y”. I will put them together into one torrent if I can find where I put that damned CD…. In the mean time feel free to ask me for any requests if there’s something you’d like me to upload.
