sleepy.ab - archive 6 February 2008 Despite the way it’s written, the post-rock band ‘sleepy.ab’ pronounces their name simply as ‘sleepy’. The ‘ab’ tacked on to the end is short for ‘abstract’, the implication being that it characterizes their shoegaze style of music. And it’s accurate. Their rock is not the kind that attempts to blow out your speakers and your ear-drums. There’s no slamming drum solos or thrashing guitar distortion. Instead sleepy.ab gradually builds on the melody of each song slowly and methodically, adding layer after layer, weaving them in between Tsuyoshi Nariyama’s soft vocals. Personally, sleepy.ab reminds me of the Feather Side, although sleepy.ab leans more towards a drifting, ethereal, “wait—how long have I been listening to this?” kind of sound.Also like the Feather Side, sleepy.ab makes some long songs. And archive is a great example of that. No song is shorter than five minutes, and including the two bonus live recordings the twelve-track album runs for ninety-two minutes. More than once you may think the album has changed tracks only to look and see that, no, actually you’re listening to a nine-minute song that has a brief pause. However, this expansive length suits sleepy.ab perfectly. Listeners who enjoy their wandering, self-exploratory ambient rock will find that it can distort one’s sense of time. By the time you finish archive there’s equal chances you could think forty minutes have passed or three hours, and be happy in either case.Existing fans of sleepy.ab will notice that archive contains some of their older songs such as ‘Scene’ and ‘inside’. These are ‘new takes’, as the album itself describes them. For those of you who have never heard sleepy.ab before, this is a great album to start with in my opinion.In either case, I hope you enjoy the album! Feedback and requests always welcome, of course.And yes, I realize in retrospect my attempt to describe the album reads like nonsense from an emo-teen’s LiveJournal account from 2002.

Bennie K - Japana-rhythm 9 November 2005 Before deciding what to upload I always search NyaaTorrents to make sure I’m not about to upload a duplicate of something. So when I searched the audio section today for ‘bennie k’ I was honestly shocked that nothing came up. I know the urban-pop/rap hasn’t released any original material in four years, but I still thought some of their music would already be here. In fact, truthfully, I mistakeningly anticipated that most of their discography would already be here and I would upload something by another artist.Either I misjudged Bennie K’s popularity likely or I am out of touch with the tastes of most people incredibly likely, or both undeniable true. Whoops.For those unfamiliar with Bennie K, they are the duo of Yamamoto Yukiyo and Yamamoto Chieko—unrelated—better known as Yuki and Cico. Their formation resulted from a series of fortunate coincidences. Both had a passion for music from a young age and that would lead both of them to Los Angeles, California in 1999. Fourteen year-old Yuki was in the city studying dance and taking formal vocal lessons to improve her singing. The twenty-one year old Cico was in Los Angeles at the same time attempting to make a career for herself in rap and hip-hop music. Yuki just happened to be staying at the home of Cico’s aunt, where the two first met. The two quickly became close friends despite their age difference.In 2000 they returned to Japan separately, each intending to pursue a solo career. In December 2000 Yuki and Cico met each other again at a Christmas music festival. That is when they decided to form a duo, and they sealed their partnership in an interesting way. The two traveled together to Fushimi Inari Taisha, a famous shrine in Kyoto. Their they prayed for future success at the temple of Inari, a Shinto god associated with prosperity. On the way back they crossed the nearby Gojou Bridge, which is the center of a Japanese folk-tale that would give the duo their name. The story goes that the monk Benkei stood at Gojou Bridge and fought every swordsman that attempted to pass. Benkei defeated nine-hundred ninety-nine warriors. But his thousandth opponent, Ushiwakamaru, finally defeated Benkei. Humbled, Benkei joined Ushiwakamaru and the two warriors traveled together and had legendary success as a duo. This story inspired Yuki and Cico so much that they initially considered using the name ‘Benkei and Ushiwakamaru’, but ultimately they shortened it, turning the former name into ‘Bennie K’ also a reference to American musician Ben E. King.Bennie K signed with a label and released their first single in less than one month.However, they were not immediately successful. Early critics felt that Yuki was under-achieving as a vocalist and that their respective age difference would make it difficult to market the duo. Bennie K’s first two albums, Cube 2002 and Essence 2003, caused little fan-fare and were not major successes by any measure. But the following year was pivotal. Not only did their single Sunrise debut in the top ten on the Oricon charts, their third album, Synchronicity, debuted at number five and would remain in the top one-hundred for the rest of the year. Bennie K had become had a critical a commercial success.Who knows what happened in that span of one year, but the difference in quality between Essence and Synchronicity is stark and unmistakable. The former is a mediocre pop album. The latter is an energetic blend of pop, rap, longue music, hip-hop, R&B, enka—a wonderful thematic synthesis. This incorporation of other genres would continue on their future albums, extending so far as to include American Country—that is rare.Of their five studio albums I decided to upload Japana-rhythm, their fourth, because I personally consider it their best. Their compilation albums are great introductions for anyone unfamiliar with Bennie K, but instead of those I also chose Japana-rhythm because the entire album has an over-arching thematic structure based around the four seasons; compilations disrupt its melodic flow. It is also their only release that ever debuted at number one on the Oricon charts—I’m not counting their first compilation album, which also debuted at the top spot.Sorry about the later than usual upload today. Tsubakiya Shijuusou - Tokyo City Rhapsody 6 February 2008 Tsubakiya Shijuusou, i.e. ‘Tsubakiya Quartet’, is one of those bands that struggled to keep a stable line-up. Ironically, considering their name, the band had four stable members for only five years out of their eleven year career 2000–2011. However, it was during those five years 2005–2010 that Tsubakiya Shijuusou released the majority of their work.Vocalist and guitarist Nakada Yuuji created the band in 2000. He spent two years in Sendai performing with different musicians before finally recruiting Kodera Ryouta as a drummer and Nagata Takashige on bass. Nakada was writing music all throughout these two years and the volatile membership of the band seemed to affect his influences. Tsubakiya Shijuusou was always a rock band, but the early flux of members and Nakada’s efforts to form a stable band brought him into contact with jazz-rock musicians, metal, electronica, light-rock and pop, and so on. Traces of them appear all throughout their discography, including this album.As a trio it took only a year before an indie label signed Tsubakiya Shijuusou. A year later they would released their first indie album, Shinkou Naru Shinzou, and then go on a period of touring. That was the time, in early 2005, that the band recruited its fourth and final member, guitarist Yasutaka Takurou who coincidentally would be the first to leave the band. They released one more indie album, Bara to Diamond, and then signed with a major label, Warner Music Japan.As a quartet Tsubakiya Shijuusou proved energetic in the work. In the period of 2005–2010 the band never had less than two releases per year, for a total of eight singles, three studio albums, and one best-of album. This album, Tokyo City Rhapsody, appeared in the wake of a series of singles. It was the band’s first major studio album, and even though it is a firmly rooted melodic rock album, one can hear the faint whispers of different genres that affected Nakada’s song-writing as he would write most of the band’s music. He was never extremely experimental during those years, but he and the rest of the band produced a refreshing flavor of rock, particularly when compared against the mainstream chart-toppers of the time.Two years later Yasutaka would leave following their second album, and a year after that the Tsubakiya Shijuusou came to a rather abrupt end. The only releases after Yasutaka’s departure were compilations, one which focused primarily on their music post-2006 and another which focused more on the 2002–2005 era. They’re worth getting if you enjoy the band, as personally I think their indie work prior to mid-2005 sounded promising but was hit or miss in general, and the compilations weed out those ‘misses’.I’m going on and on again…. Namie Amuro - Sweet 19 Blues 22 July 1996 Sweet 19 Blues is Namie Amuro’s first studio album, uploaded by request for Shirokij.I feel like anyone reading this already knows Namie Amuro. She is like Ayumi Hamasaki or Utada Hikaru—you cannot listen to J-Pop and not come across solo artists who are that popular and have had that much success in the industry. I usually try to give some biographical information about each musician or band I upload, but forgive me for assuming everyone already knows Namie Amuro.So instead of talking about Amuro in general I want to talk about this album in particular, and specifically the connection to Tetsuya Komuro. Known to many by his initials TK, Komuro made a name for himself in the early 80’s as a member of the band TM Network. A decade later he was writing songs for a lot of up-and-coming pop artists: Namie Amuro, hitomi, Ami Suzuki, Ryouko Shinohara, and he was performing in the band Globe with his future wife Keiko Yamada and French DJ Marc Panther—and band that would later include Yoshiki from X Japan. The point I’m trying to make is simply this: Tetsuya Komuro was the mastermind of 90’s J-Pop. That is the time when I personally began listening to Japanese music and following the industry, and I remember thinking that everything TK touched turned to gold. Every top-selling J-Pop single or album seemed to involve him in some way. He knew how to scout the best talent, how to promote artists, how to write the music that people seemed to want the most—everything Tetsuya Komuro did in the 90’s made him look like a genius.I mention all of this because TK was the producer for Namie Amuro’s debut album, and arguably he worked more closely with her on it than he would any other album of hers. European-style dance and club music was becoming popular in Japan during the mid-90’s. In fact, in 1995 Namie Amuro was working together with Dave Rogers, an Italian producer and musician himself. Later in 1995 Amuro signed with Avex Trax, where TK was working, and he was quick to capitalize on both Amuro’s talent for that type of music and the general public’s demand for it. In the final four months of 1995 Namie Amuro produced two singles with TK, one of which sold over one-million copies. It was a huge commercial success and a sign of things to come. In 1996 the two worked together on Sweet 19 Blues, which was another huge hit. And the rest is history really.If you’re a Namie Amuro fan but you haven’t heard her earliest work then you really ought to check out this album. Sweet 19 Blues is a pop-dance album, without question, but personally I think the album has more variety than any album Namie Amuro would go on to release until Play in 2007. The album was wildly popular and became the best selling Japanese album of all time, until Utada Hikaru released First Love in 1999 which as of 2013 remains the best selling Japanese album ever. Takahiro Maeda worked on many of the lyrics for Sweet 19 Blues and the influences such as the mellow pop/rap style of songs like ‘Private’ represents the type of variety that would vanish from Amuro’s following albums.Hope you enjoy it Shirokij, and everybody else too! Modern Conya - A Reason Why the Weather Exists 6 February 2008 Modern Conya provides the perfect self-description on their website: ”Colorful sounds and deep messages by 8 magnetic performers.” It is an apt label for this peppy group that blends in ska, jazz, and some big-band elements into their overall pop-rock sound. Modern Conya consists of the common vocalist, guitarist, bassist, and drummer line-up; but on top of that their other members play the trumpet, flute, tenor saxophone, and alto saxophone. The result is snappy, catchy, and just plain fun.This album is their fourth and most recent. I have not heard all of their music, but personally I consider this album to be the best of what I have had the chance to hear. Modern Conya has been on hiatus, at least in terms of recording new music, since 2010 when vocalist Maki Nagayama married and gave birth to her first child. I think the band has continued to perform since then, but I may be wrong about that and their hiatus could be more encompassing.If you liked the albums I uploaded by dorlis and Paris Match then you’re going to like Modern Conya. And even if you didn’t, I hope you enjoy!As always, I welcome any requests and feedback.
