Sifow - Love Spell 15 August 2007 Shiho Fujita, better known by the pseudonym Sifow, has had a brief but interesting career as a musician.As a teenager Sifow fell in love with the ganguro fashion style—you know, this. In 2004, at the age of eighteen, Sifow began to appear in ganguro fashion magazines and related advertisements. This quickly brought her a lot of attention, both positive and negative. On the one hand, Sifow proved to be an immediate success in the fashion world, glamorizing the ganguro style she loved. However, on the other hand, she also began to receive a lot of negative feedback from people who feel the entire ganguro look is representative of a problem with young Japanese girls, and with Sifow’s popularity they called her out as effectively championing that ‘poisonous’ movement.”RobbyLob, you’re rambling again. What does this have to do with her music or anything?” Good question.The negative reactions Sifow received for her choices in modeling coincided with her decision to become a singer. In 2005 this culminated in her releasing the single I Uta. She produced the single herself and printed only two-thousand copies under the realistic assumption that she would not be an overnight sensation. Well she was wrong; half of those two-thousand CDs sold in less than twenty-four hours. What made this more impressive was the fact that Sifow had promoted the single entirely over the Internet; she created a promotional video for the single, but again, it was only released online and did not initially play on television music networks. Sifow released a total of four singles that year, all of them selling out rapidly, and that caught the attention of Avex Trax. They offered to sign her and she accepted.Sifow decided to use her new-found popularity in music to combat the negative stereotypes surrounding ganguro culture. She addressed the subject in the lyrics for her songs—which she always wrote her own lyrics—and continued to rather flagrantly flaunt the ganguro style on the covers and promotional material for her singles and albums. Sifow is not the first J-Pop musician to begin as a model, and she certainly will not be the last. But few have made the subject of fashion itself the focal topic of their music.On the subject of Love Spell itself, her second album, it is what I would consider typical J-Pop in most respects. It perhaps borrows more from the euro-beat genre than most. The album reminds me of the mid-to-late 90’s music of Kimura Yuki. There is nothing about the composition of Sifow’s music that is revolutionary or ground-breaking. But that doesn’t imply an absence of quality. Love Spell is an entertaining pop album in my opinion, and while Sifow is not a stunning vocalist she still gives a solid performance. The contrarian nature of her lyricism and overall presentation provides an interesting texture to her music that helps it stand out—in my opinion anyways.Sifow has been on indefinite hiatus since the release of Love Spell. Technically she still has a working relationship with Avex Trax. But it remains to be seen whether or not Sifow will return to Japanese music. If she does not, then at least in two years she created two entertaining an interesting J-Pop albums with a borderline activist agenda behind them.Sorry for rambling on and on again. Tsuki Amano - Uma Salmon 23 July 2007 Since her debut in 2001 Tsuki Amano has created a sizable, impressive discography; and that includes the fact she ‘retired’ in August 2008, but return in 2010. A decent chunk of her music is already on NyaaTorrents, which to me indicates she’s managed to garner a decent fan-base outside of her native country. In my experience most people—inside and outside of Japan—recognize Tsuki Amano for providing the ending themes for the second and third games in the Fatal Frame franchise.All of that said, I remain compelled to say that Tsuki Amano is an indie artist, if only for the fact that she willingly adopts that moniker.Tsukiko Amano has spent most of her life as a musician, saying that she began studying the piano at the age of five. By the time Amano finished high school she had already invested years improving her vocals and her guitar skills. And she already showed promise as a songwriter in an industry where many artists perform music composed by others—especially solo female musicians, or am I the only one who has that impression?Amano’s early singles and albums were not massive commercial achievements, but they were by no means failures either. Her Western-influenced rock styling and her strong sense of independence proved popular enough; Amano would not only write her own songs but was typically involved in every little detail of her albums, e.g. creating the cover art herself. She attracted the attention of Pony Canyon, a major label, and it is there that Tsukiko Amano would release her most commercially successful music. I think her 2005 album A Moon Child in the Sky did the best in terms of the Oricon charts, but I am just pulling that off the top of my head; I am too lazy to fact-check and could easily be wrong on that, heh.Amano released this album I’ve ripped today, Uma Salmon, during her stint at Pony Canyon. The name is a reference to the actress Uma Thurman, as Japanese often uses the ’s’ to imitate the English ’th’. This was not the first album that Amano named after an actor. It was a pattern for album names during the first seven years of her career, e.g.1. Sharon Stones2. Meg & Lion3. Winona RidersSpeaking of names—acute readers who are kind enough to read this long-winded diatribes of mine will have noticed I have written her name as both ‘Tsukiko’ and ‘Tsuki’. The former is her real name. But in 2008 she announced to her fans that she would henceforth go by ‘Tsuki’. And then she entered her brief retirement soon afterwards. Upon her return she continued to use the name Tsuki, and so that is the name I used when uploading this album, even though her name was still Tsukiko in 2007.I realize I have said almost nothing about the album itself. All I really can think to say is that it’s an awesome rock album, and like Winona Riders it is a collection of B-sides and other songs that were not previously released on any of her studio albums. I would not call Uma Salmon her best album, but I also don’t believe Amano’s ever released a bad album. So if you like this then I’d expect you will like everything else she’s done.As always, enjoy! Metis - One Love 15 August 2007 Metis is female Japanese reggae singer and musician. However, she first appeared as an R&B artist in 2003 and would release two indie albums in three years: ANSWER and MUSIC, which in 2009 were re-released as a two-disc combination. In 2006 Metis signed with the label Nippon Crown. This is when her music made a decisive shift in the direction of reggae. I don’t know how much of that change to attribute to Nippon Crown—who primarily works with J-Pop artists—or by Metis herself, who thoroughly embraced the new reggae direction regardless. Metis released three albums while at Nippon Crown:1. One Love2. One Heart3. One SoulThe latter two are available via existing torrents here. So I am just filling out the trio by providing the first album.Of the three I would say that One Love is the most reggae-influenced. Metis’ origins with R&B did not simply vanish. They gradually reappeared in her music as time went on, very similar to lecca in that respect. In fact, even on One Love you can hear some of the R&B influence.Metis’ uncommonly deep vocals and her talents as a musician, particularly on the saxophone, put her in an unmistakable and most importantly entertaining position in Japanese music.
